Is Wix a good website builder?
I have had the pleasure to explore some web builders and today I would like to answer the question: is Wix a good website builder?
My overall experience with this builder was good, but I do have many mixed feelings with this company.
For the sake of being on the same page with everyone reading this, go ahead and see the definition Wikipedia gives for Wix Website.
Now that we all understand what Wix is let’s take a look at what I found.
The Website Builder
I was impressed with the ease of the website builder, and I do like the drag and drop feature.
The designs they have are quite impressive for the average photographer or hobbyist, but the commercial applications are a bit out of date for my liking.
I liked the widget area and they do have an app store for enhancing your website.
What I did not like about the website builder is that if you get your site all built and then find out you just do not like the design and want to explore a different design, you must start all over. There is no theme change features at all.
Premium Package Vs. Free Accounts
Wix offers several plans to their customers, starting at free and working up to commercial plans.
They offer an online store feature included with their e-commerce plan, and it is not a very good feature. You can do much better elsewhere for way less money.
The free accounts are OK but they are all owned by WIX and they are not ad-free.
To add your own domain name you must upgrade and you will still see ads on your site at this level.
You can go up one more level and the ads will be gone.
Email options
Email accounts are lacking on all membership levels.
They do offer an email service for an additional $4.08 minimum, depending on your requirements, and this pushes the membership amounts over the competitors, thus you can do better with other services.
SEO options
All SEO must be added manually.
Page titles, meta description, and alt tags can be added, but you must do it yourself.
This is one of the bigger drawbacks for me.
Support Options
The support at Wix is by FAQ, their forum, and the phone.
They are very prompt and the information is very easy to understand and follow, but my beef is no live support offered.
The phone support is OK but slow and hard to understand and I have a hard time calling it live even though it is.
They do cover many options in their FAQsection, but not all problems are covered. Still, I do recommend everyone using this service to read this section.
Overall View
I came away with a good feeling with the website builder itself but was very unhappy with the email and the lack of being able to change templates without a complete rebuild.
I enjoyed the FAQ section and like I stated above I must urge anyone who does use Wix to read this section regardless of, whether or not, you are having any troubles with your website.
It will save you time later on in your experience, as you are sure to run into some of the problems covered there.
I would recommend this service to someone who does not require email and does not have to rely on the commercial side of owning a website.
The hobbyist or the amateur photographer would find this service a good deal as they have really good templates for media display, but if you are a professional this service will have a hard time keeping up.
I would give the whole service 5 out of 10 points and the website builder is a good 3 out of 10 all by itself so this does not give the rest of the service much credit, and it does not deserve it.
Where would I go?
I was lucky and I found a place called Wealthy Affiliate University that has a free starter account that includes two ad-free websites through their 30-second website builder.
This place is amazing and offers a hosting ability to keep up with any sized business and all the training you would ever need or use in your day to day operations of your website.
