As it was then, it never will be again. I mean, before Google opened her zoo. Before that time it was normal to stuff your website with keywords and non-relevant backlinks to score high on the Google ranking. Not anymore!

Perhaps you wonder what these updates mean, I did wonder, and I investigated how Google adjusted their algorithm.

Come, let’s take a walk in the Google Zoo

But first, let me explain a bit about how Google came to release these algorithm updates.

The Google bots are crawling websites searching for keywords and density. The experts told you all about the importance of where to place the keywords on your website. The more keywords you placed throughout the content, the higher you could rank on Google. There was quite some stuffing done back then. And however, it worked great, there was less and less quality content to find on the #1 page of Google.

Keywords

The text robots grabbed every keyword from the webpage, the more, the better. But that was at the expense of quality and content.

So Google came with the first Algorithm update, Panda

Panda Google Update

You probably have heard about Google’s Panda. That update was released a few years ago. Basically, Google wanted to improve their crawling to offer the searchers better, and good quality articles. The robots were instructed to look forward to that. Things as website trust, activity, and copied content suddenly became important. The robots could now also assess content value. And all those copy/paste websites that advertise, do as me and become filthy rich in one day, got it very difficult. They could not conform to the new Google rules.

Penguin Google SEO

About a year after Google started the zoo with the panda, they came with the penguin. This approached the enormous amount of irrelevant backlink and only backlinks that had something to do with the subject of a website counted in the rankings. Website developers were pressed to stop this over-optimization. In addition, Google also introduced the recognition for synonyms. So that not only the keyword but also the synonym works to get higher in rank.

The next update that was implemented was called Hummingbird. Again a renewed algorithm. Google learned the robots to recognize voices and how to cope with that. Also, keyboard entered searched was included in this new algorithm

Google updates hawk

Hawk internet in marketing local

Most recently, in August 2017, the Hawk was introduced. The Hawk is specialized in local areas. And Google does see the relevance of it when people search for local subjects, such as restaurants, they like to find multiple options. Not only the one with the best SEO website but also the one with the nearest located diner. In fact, Google turns competitors into associates. And with this update, gives a local search much more options.

Do you focus on local searchers?

Then this piece of text is important to you.

  • Google gives you the opportunity to list your business locally.
  • Be sure that your website is up to date.
  • Ask people to place testimonials for your business.
  • Focus mainly on your local area.

My conclusion for Panda, Penguin, and Hummingbird

Maybe you do not have a website (yet) or you are already working on one, these point below are important rules of Google:

DON’T

  • Stuff keywords all over your webpage.
  • Try to overload your page with keywords.
  • Use only one or two keywords.

DO’S

  • Use keywords economically.
  • Use your keyword phrase also separately.
  • Be sure, wherever you place your keywords, that they make sense.
  • Find some great synonyms for your chosen keyword phrase.

With some simple adjustments, you can make your texts qualitatively better for the search machines.

Fred Maccabees minor update?

There is a rumor that in December 2017 there was also a minor update, the Fred Maccabee update, but the opinions are very divided about that. Whether it took place or not. The name Fred Maccabee does not fit on the list of animals too, anyway. Maybe it’s the overseer of Googles Zoo?

July 2018 Speed update

On Wednesday, January 17, 2018, Google announced an update that they will roll out in July 2018: the Speed Update. This update focuses on the speed of mobile web pages.

Two details to remember for this update:

  • The update only has an impact on mobile search results
  • The update has an impact on just a few percent of the searches

It is not very exciting. But for the sake of clarity, this is now communicated by Google.

The loading time was already used as a ranking signal, but that was especially true for searches on a desktop. From July 2018, page speed will also be used as a ranking signal for mobile searches. Pages that are affected by this are the pages that are really slow. This means it has an impact on a small percentage of all (mobile) searches.
